HIV Drugs: The Drug Empire

A class action complaint filed in the Northern District of California alleges that Gilead Sciences, Inc. (Gilead) amassed an HIV drug empire by entering into anti-competitive agreements with other pharmaceutical companies including Bristol-Myers Squibb, Janssen Pharmaceuticals and Japan Tobacco in order to prohibit them from releasing into the market their generic versions of Gilead’s tenofovir disoproxil and emtricitabine. This is not the first time Gilead has come under fire for issues related to its HIV “cocktail” medications, including Truvada. This action was filed a week after the filing of a complaint alleging harmful side effects caused by Gilead’s medications.
